Abstract

This article shows the way that society cartagenera accepted and adapted the idea of equality to their local context. The demographics of this city, where higher “castes of color” (black, mulatto, sambo and browns) and the military-political importance that they had gained from the late eighteenth century when he joined the militia, and especially with the events of Independence, the laid the path that developed the socio-political and racial equality in this Colombian city.
