Abstract

This article states that encomiendas (control over land and indians granted to an encomendero during the colonial period) which were issued after 1536, originated native towns located in Valle del Cauca, which were mainly populated by natives from other towns. In addition the article examines the social and economic context of such towns, as well as the demographic crisis they underwent.
