Industry and city. Urban growth of Barrancabermeja, 1926 - 1936

Abstract

The present article studies the process of Barrancabermeja’s urban growth between 1926 and 1936 after the arrival of the petroleum North American company, Tropical Oil Company. Therefore, the analysis is framed in the relation industrialization / urbanization. One raises that, in this case, the industry provokes the growth of the municipality. Depending on the comprehension of the process we analyze, in the first moment, the demographic and real-estate changes; later, one seeks to understand the existing relation between “ La Troco “ and the local administration to establish the influence of one and another agent in the process. Finally, there studies the real-estate municipal market across the operations of purchase and sale real estate giving special emphasis to two neighborhoods in process of urbanization in which the speculation in the value of the land was a fundamental and typical factor.
