Abstract

Turbidity is the measure of the clarity of water, related to the effect produced by the suspended material, by decreasing the passage of light through it. This research evaluated the effect of a filter medium based on the coconut shell or endocarp (Cocos nucifera), as a turbidity reducer of synthetic turbid water, formulated with kaolin clay. A solution was prepared with 5000 mg/l kaolin in water and then diluted to a turbidity of 100 NTU, which was passed through a filter packed with granulated coconut shell and measured turbidity, total suspended solids and pH. Six quantities of coconut shell were used and the influence of this variable on the values of the measured variables (turbidity, SST and pH) was analyzed. A regression analysis was applied to each of the variables studied and mathematical models were obtained that define the behavior of each of them with respect to the amount of coconut shell, as well as analysis of variance with α = 0.05, using the statistical package Statgraphics Centurion XVI.I. The results indicated that the coconut shell can be used as a granular filter medium for the removal of turbidity and TSS, in addition the mathematical models obtained were non-linear, intrinsically linear with R2 > 0.90 for all variables, as well as statistically significant by obtaining p-value < 0.05 in all cases.
