Abstract

The Colombian energy landscape is grappling with growing challenges as it seeks to harmonize rising demand with sustainable and stable supply. Despite traditional reliance on sources such as hydroelectricity and newer renewables like solar and wind, their vulnerabilities and intermittency have prompted the search for more reliable alternatives. This article delves into the potential integration of nuclear energy, focusing on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and microreactors. These sources not only provide consistent operation independent of climatic conditions but also align with global decarbonization and environmental sustainability objectives. Through an in-depth technical, regulatory, and societal assessment, this article underscores how nuclear energy can bolster the National Interconnected System (SIN), diversify the energy supply to remote regions, and position Colombia at the vanguard of a responsible and sustainable energy transition.
