Revista ION was created in 1953 by the students of the Study Center of the Chemical Engineering School of the Industrial University of Santander. In 1979, it was transferred to the School's director and teachers, it was officially registered and obtained its ISSN.

Since its inception, Revista ION has been oriented to the publication of results of scientific and technological research activities in fields of Chemical Engineering and related fields. In 2011, it changed its periodicity from annual to semi-annual, and in 2023 it changed it to quarterly, which continues to publish three issues per year.

This journal is Open Access and free of charge, and the publication of articles is free of charge for the authors (Free of APC). All the articles have a DOI identification number since 2017.

It is a publication admitted by Indexing System of Specialized Colombian Scientific Journals - Publindex / Colciencias, in category C.
