Abstract

The K-Ar dating methods on illites are an important tool for the study of sedimentary basins, hydrothermal events and low- and very low-grade metamorphic rocks. The granulometric fractions that better register the thermal history are those between 2.0-0.4µm, 0.4-0.2µm and <0.2µm, due its high concentration of newformed illites. A preliminary SEM study of the rocks, and the XRD analysis of each granulometric fraction is fundamental to interpretate the geological meaning of the obtained isotopic data.
