Abstract

It was studied the section of the carboniferous located N of Bucaramanga and which E and W morphological and tectonic limits are the Bucaramanga and Suárez-Río de Oro faults. This zone is composed in a great deal by carboniferous sediments corresponding to the so called by Merritt "Serie of Suratá". Three levels can be distinguished, the basal one composed of red sandstones and quartzites, the middle one calcareous and the upper one with marls. A short discussion on the designation Suratá series is also included. The general structure of the region is represented by the eastern flank of an anticline, NNW-SSE direction and deeps towards the E between 40°_70°
