Abstract

This work presents some case studies of fault zones and fault rocks associated in order to show the type of geologic information they may potentially reveal and contribute to the knowledge about the geologic history of a region. In igneous and metamorphic rocks of the Central and Western Cordilleras it is possible to suggest complex geologic histories characterized by multiple deformative phases of fragile and ductile origin. In areas dominated by sedimentary rocks the presence, not only of fault rocks but structures associated to fault zones allow interpreting kinematic and geometric elements which should be taken into account in field geologic mapping campaigns.

Key words: Fault zones, fault rocks, Romeral Fault System, Colombian Andes.
