Abstract
Exercised in an art of purely verbal thinking, the sophists were the first to engage in reflection on words, on their value and their property, on the function that corresponded to them in the direction of reasoning: the capital step towards the discovery of style , conceived as an end in itself, as an intrinsic end, was given. It only remained to transpose this verbal search, to give it the object of the harmony of the phrase, to substitute the game of abstraction for the game of expression.
