Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the differences between the human and the nonhuman way of relating technically to the environment. Firstly, we criticize the naturalistic “ecological” or “contextualist” position (Preston, Ingold) because it does not allow such a distinction. Secondly, we put forward the notion of “intentional affordance” (Tomasello) to characterize human technical action. Thirdly, we sketch a gradualist scheme where the specific difference of human technical action can find a place.
