Abstract

In this article I analyze the exhausting routine that Plato has Socrates follow in the dialogues "Lysis," "Charmides," "Laches" and "Eutydemos." Also discuss the exercises in experimental metaphysics that Epicurus prescribes to his disciples to deal with spiritual restlessness. These two kinds of therapy that serve as distinct exercises for training the soul seek to fortify the organs that help a person life a calm life. The training in experimental metaphysics that Socrates teaches in these dialogues prepares a person to resist the threatening outbursts of desire. As for the training that Epicurus recommends, they train the body-soul so that once the worry about immortality is eliminated, the disciple, through a curbing of the desires, gains spiritual serenity. Idealist training. Materialist training.
