Abstract

Water from gas and oil fields has a high grade of toxicity. This article shows a list of the contaminants associated with the production water from gas fields and the possible environmental impacts caused by their discarding into the ocean. Also, the different international regulations governing the discarding of production water to the sea and the technologies that have been developed for the removal of pollutants are mentioned. The results of the study show some advanced water treatment systems applied to gas fields that could reduce the environmental impact on the marine ecosystems of the Colombian Caribbean.
