Abstract

Emissions from compression ignition (CI) engines are being heavily regulated. Renouncing to diesel engines is not a solution to the established regulations due to their good performance. The coupling of cleaner and alternative fuels to current diesel engines is a remarkable proposal because it would take advantage of its high efficiency and the green characteristics of unconventional fuels. Hydrogen is the most promising fuel because is clean, alternative and renewable (from alternative energy sources). The use of dual-fuel diesel-hydrogen engines promotes the reduction of pollutants ($ CO_x $ and soot) and increases the thermal efficiency of the engine. In this work, the CI engines in dual-fuel mode diesel-hydrogen is evaluated about many concerns. The effect of adding hydrogen to the CI engines on engine performance and pollutant emissions was reviewed. Furthermore, Colombian legislation and Colombian energy matrix were described, analyzing the commitments that are proposed in energy processes. The studies in Colombia of the engines using hydrogen were reviewed and the recommended enrichment limits set forth in the literature were established.
