Abstract

This paper shows the potential ofnon-uniform electric fields to manipulaie micro-partides. Thiswas carried out by presenting the physical principies which rule the movemeni ofelectricallyneutral partides when they are subjected to non-homogeneous electric fields, originafingphenomena such as common dielectrophoresis (DE?), traveling-wave dielectrophoresis (TWD)and electro-rotafion (ROT). Furthermore some experimental results are shown in a spiral CMOSmicrostructure which was tested employingpolystyrene micro-spheres of6mm in diameter. Finally.the Saccharomyces cerevisiae manipulation was shown by means ofplatinum electrodes whichinduce common dielectrophoresis on the yeast ceUs.
