Abstract

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the genus zygomycetes, with an annual prevalence of close to 10 000 cases in the world, it is an extremely rare clinical entity, rapidly progressing and fatal. In Colombia there are no documentary bases in this regard, its diagnosis and early treatment determine the prognosis of these patients. The objective of this article is to present the case of a immunosuppressed patient with maxillary osteomyelitis secondary to rhinosinusal mucormycosis, who began his symptoms with facial pain, associated with left hemicranial headache and toothache that progressed to holocranial headache, physical examination showed bone exposure, tissue necrotic, devitalized in the malar area, for which reason it is studied with diagnostic aids, including imaging and tissue biopsy, finding microorganisms compatible with mucormycosis, its clinical course was complicated, resulting in death despite adequate diagnosis and treatment with amphotericin B.
