Abstract

Obesity is a conditioning factor for the development of pathologies such as: type 2 diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemias, respiratory sleep disorders, cardiovascular conditions and increased risk of cancer. In Colombia, about 56.4 % of the population is overweight. For this reason, between October 15, 2022 and January 31, 2023, a review of the subject was carried out in the Scielo and Pubmed/Medline databases, divided into two parts: the first, focused on the pathophysio- logical relationship of pathologies such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cancer, among others, and obesity; the second, aimed at establishing the appropriate approach to obesity, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological measures. This review seeks to highlight the importance of a comprehensive approach to patients with obesity, empha- sizing the importance of its identification as a risk factor or trigger for various metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
