Abstract

Gastric adenocarcinoma represents epithelial neoplasia in 90-95% of gastric cancers worldwide, with about 1 million new cases annually,
the fourth most common cancer regard to incidence, with a 2:1 respect to gender male or female and average age of onset of 65 years. It is
known that environmental factors, genetic predisposition associated with nutritional factors studied in numerous publications contribute
to its appearance, aggressiveness and clinical outcome. Helicobacter pylori Infection remains one of the most infuential factors but is
not the sole related to the onset of the disease. Usually in Colombia, the diagnosis is made late fnding an advanced stage with little
chance of curative intent. Surgical treatment is merely counting depending on the stage with endoscopic therapy, gastric resections or
gastrojejunal bypass in advanced cases where only palliative treatment is indicated. Chemotherapy or radiation therapies have poor utility
in this disease as monotherapy. The following review pretend update the reader on the subject, specifying the methods of diagnosis and
management recent therapies in advanced or emerging pathology, with a view on the importance of early detection strategies that are
made in other countries and could be implemented in our country within a structured program of care in primary prevention and timely
diagnosis. (MÉD.UIS. 2013;26(2):59-70).
