Abstract

According to the International Center of Academic Integrity (ICAI), academic integrity is "a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect , responsibility and courage» (ICAI, 2014). Therefore, it is essential that these values are incorporated into the work of the members of the academic community and are translated into concrete actions to foster and promote integrity. In this sense, this paper reviews the concepts of academic integrity and plagiarism, the most frequent modalities of non-original work and some recommendations to promote academic integrity. Regarding research, some ethical aspects are addressed from the point of view of the editor of a popular science journal, academic peers, and authors, as well as key elements in the writing of academic publications by students and researchers at all levels. Finally, it briefly shows how to interpret a Turnitin similarity report used to promote the importance of copyright and the correct application of citation and referencing rules in academic documents.
