Abstract

Introduction: The hospitalization of the newborn implies a continuous source of stress for the parents. By adopting individualized support measures and in partnership with the parents, the nurse enhances the harmonious and competent development of the newborn, favoring the development of parental skills. Materials and methods: Quantitative study, simple descriptive type, using the Scale of Support from Nurses to Parents, whose content validation for the Portuguese population was carried out by Sandra Valadão in 2012. The sample consisted of 100 parents of newborns born in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a Hospital in Northern Portugal. Discussion: The results obtained are in line with the results of Valadão 2012, in which the instrumental domain was also the one with the highest score, followed by the cognitive / appreciative, emotional and informative domains. They are also in agreement with the study by Tran et al in 2009. However, the emotional domain was the one with the lowest score, not meeting our results. Conclusion: The satisfaction of parents in about nursing care provided to their children is high, with areas that can be improved, such as the established communication and the information provided.
