Abstract
Introduction: The relationship between suicidal ideation and various aspects of mental health has been investigated in academic and occupational contexts. However, there is a significant gap in the analysis of the psychometric properties of scales used for its measurement in Colombian population, as is the case with the Paykel Suicidal Ideation Scale PSS, by its acronym in English. Objective: To determine the psychometric properties of the Paykel Suicidal Ideation Scale and verify that the structure of the observed data corresponds to the theoretical factorial structure. Materials and Methods: Study conducted in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia in 2023. It employed a descriptive cross-sectional instrumental design. The sample consisted of 119 adolescent mothers affiliated with a foundation who voluntarily completed the Paykel Suicidal Ideation Scale. Normality was assessed. Psychometric properties included internal consistency and construct validity through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive, multivariate statistics, tetrachoric ordinal McDonald’s Alpha and Omega coefficients. Results: Mean age: 19.26 years. PSS: Overall mean: 1.39 Standard Deviation= 0.91. In the exploratory factor analysis, construct validity was supported, with one factor explaining 76.45% of the variance, while the confirmatory analysis confirmed validity with satisfactory fit indices: X2: 9.492; df: 5; X2/df: 1.98; RMSEA: 0.08; 95% CI: 0.00-0.20; TLI: 0.97; CFI: 0.99; GFI: 0.99; AGFI: 0.99; SRMR: 0.07. Internal consistency was satisfactory: 0.92 95% CI: 0.70-0.99. Conclusions: The Paykel Suicidal Ideation Scale is a useful instrument with adequate internal consistency and construct validity in this sample. These findings provide indicators that facilitate research on suicidal ideation using this instrument and encourage the development of research hypotheses to refine its performance and generalize the results of these measurements.
