Abstract
Worldwide, between 28-35% of adults older than 65 years reported an annual fall, and in Colombia, the prevalence of falls was 49% the past year. It is estimated that these falls result in an affecting the functionality and Health-Related Quality of Life. In addition, social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affect physical and emotional health and increasing the risk of falls. The objective of this study was to describe the Health-Related Quality of Life among community elderly according to risk of falling. At the participants’ home, the Berg Balance Scale and Time Up and Go cognitive were used for the assessment of falls risk. World Health Organization questionnaire (WHOQOL-OLD) was applied by video calls. A total of 35 community elderly participated, age 70 ± 6 years old, 17,1% with high risk of falling and 82.9% with low risk. Statistically significant differences were found for domains the autonomy (p=0,04), and death (p=0.02). There were no statistically significant differences in the overall score of WHOQOL-OLD (high risk: 80.5 ± 7.2; low risk: 79.1 ± 7.3 points; p = 0.66). In this study, perception of HRQOL could be related to family support, functional independence and health condition. Quality of life and FR were multidimensional constructs, and future studies are required to evaluate the impact of the pandemic, and the effect of programs for elderly and caregivers.
