Abstract
Introduction: Neonatal screening is a public health tool for early detection of diseases in asymptomatic periods, with intervention options. This aims to impact morbidity and mortality in pediatric age. Objetive: To assess the perception of Colombian pediatricians regarding the expansion of neonatal screening and its practices beyond those currently known. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted through an online survey involving 748 participants. Initially, a univariate analysis was performed on usual practices and the perception of expansion. Subsequently, a bivariate analysis was conducted on individual perception by diseases for screening, known screening practices, and familiarity with suggested screening pathologies. Results: Of all the surveyed physicians, 96.3% agreed on implementing neonatal screening. Hypothyroidism was the pathology with the highest physician contact, and hip screening was the most commonly performed test. Concerning the cost-effectiveness of these tests, less than 70% considered them cost-effective, and there was variability in the importance of screening concerning individual pathologies. Cardiac pathologies, jaundice screening, and red reflex assessment appeared to have greater importance in relation to knowledge or contact with these diseases. Conclusions: The vast majority of physicians support expanding neonatal screening, believing it could enhance pediatric health outcomes. However, uncertainty exists regarding the healthcare system’s support to complement the norm.
