Resumo

As lesões causadas pelo trânsito (TBC) inserem-se nas principais causas de mortalidade e de deficiência a nível mundial, fato que se reflete no lugar que ocupam nas primeiras dez causas de vida ajustadas por deficiência, com importantes custos e impacto económico e social para as sociedades que as padecem. Em 2004, a Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) lançou o primeiro relatório sobre a prevenção do LCT. No entanto, em anos posteriores essa situação não melhorou, pelo que as Nações Unidas lançaram a Década de Ação para a Segurança Rodoviária (2011-2020), onde os governos foram convidados a projetar e implementar ações para reduzir a carga associada a este problema; entre estas se encontram design e melhoramento de vias, atenção oportuna pós-sinistro, controle da velocidade, medidas de controle administrativo, desenho e melhoramento de padrões veiculares, entre outras. As medidas baseadas na abordagem da população revelaram-se mais poderosas do que as medidas que induzem alterações comportamentais individuais.
