Abstract

This research addresses the role of cultural capital in the academic success of university students, based on Pierre Bourdieu's theory. It examines how cultural capital affects both academic performance and adaptation to the university environment and development opportunities. The epistemological perspective focuses on the nature of knowledge linked to the impact of cultural capital in higher education, while the axiological perspective is oriented towards the valuation of equity and diversity in the university environment. The study has a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, analyzing the relationship between cultural capital and academic success. The sample comprises 100 first- and second-year students in two universities in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A structured questionnaire was used with four categories: cultural knowledge, educational capital, social networks and support, and adaptation and personal development. The results highlight the importance of cultural knowledge, educational capital and social networks in academic achievement. The need for comprehensive approaches to promote educational equity is raised and the complex interrelationship between the dimensions of cultural capital is recognized, suggesting the importance of cultural diversity in achieving inclusive educational policies.
