Abstract

Objective: To establish the association between the quality of life of the family caregiver and the predictors
of the profile of the caregiver and the patient, the burden of care and the adoption of the role in a Colombian
population. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study carried out with 489 family caregivers of patients with
chronic disease in Medellín, Colombia. We used the following scales: Sociodemographic characterization sheet,
Pulses Profile, Caregiver Role Adoption Scale, Zarit burden interview, WHOQOL-BREF quality of life scale. The
establishment of the predictor variables was carried out by means of a multiple linear regression model. Results:
The participants were mostly women (92%) with a mean age of 54 years. It was found that the patient’s education
(β = 1.805), perceived social support (β = 0.939), religious commitment (β = 1.87), patient dependency (β = -0.29),
burden of care (β = -0.175) and the dimensions response to the role (β = -0.714), organization of the role (β = 0.769)
and tasks of the role (β = 0.364) are significant predictors of the quality of life of the family caregiver. Conclusion:
The quality of life of the caregiver is influenced by patient characteristics such as their education and degree of
dependency, and by other conditions of care such as perceived social support, religious commitment, burden of care and the adoption of the role of the caregiver.
