Abstract
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage, a new zoonotic infection, monkeypox (Monkeypox) has the world on high alert. As of August 18, 2022, nearly 94 countries in the Americas, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Australia had confirmed almost 40,000 cases of this disease1. Monkeypox is an organism close to human smallpox. This plague reached a mortality rate of 30% and in 1980 the World Health Organization (WHO) considered this disease eradicated2. A worldwide mass vaccination campaign in the 1960s and 1970s halted transmission; Today, smallpox is the only human pathogen that has been declared eradicated, although samples still exist in highly biosafety laboratories in Russia and the United States3,4.
